Artist and Curator Barbara Brown’s statement:
The WSG artist’s book shows have always been great fun to present. I believe the visitors
attending this exhibition will find the show entertaining, profound and inspiring.
Since the term “artist’s book” will most likely be confusing for some, I feel I should begin by
explaining that these “books” shall be defined as (mostly) three-dimensional book-inspired art
objects. Some of these pieces will surely defy the traditional idea of what a book is.
Artist’s books are most often either one-of-a-kind or created in limited editions. They tell their
stories in myriad ways, sometimes with imagery and form, and sometimes by using text with
imagery. In creating these objects, artists often borrow freely from many art forms and
media, thus giving the artist a wide array of tools to work with, including, but not limited to,
printmaking, letterpress, collage, photography, textile, video.
Although some of the pieces in the show are recognizable as books, others might be hanging
on a wall or projected.
