The contradictory forces of nature — its unpredictable, humbling power juxtaposed with its soothing seasonal rhythms — captured my artistic imagination the first time I picked up a brush. These forces continue to captivate me.
I usually begin with a concept, idea, or image that involves starting points of color, shape, and line. As the work develops, I respond to each level of these elements of art intuitively, in the moment. Then I step back, reevaluate, and reassess before engaging with the painting again.
I apply many layers of paint — some in bold, sweeping strokes, others delicately fashioned with a palette knife — to create complex, textural layers. Only in this way does an image emerge. The layers simultaneously conceal and reveal the work underneath the surface.
